The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has conferred a Posthumous Award of Bravery on Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC (ASE II) Aminu Harisu Sahabi, who was tragically killed in the line of duty.

This was made known on the EFCC’s X handle (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

“Olukoyede made the announcement on Friday, February 7, 2025, during a condolence visit to the late officer’s family in Gawon Nama, Sokoto State,” the statement read.

Sahabi was murdered in Awka, Anambra State, on January 17, 2025, while on an official assignment to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters.

Accompanied by Commander of the EFCC, CE Ahmed Pate, Ag. Director of the Sokoto Zonal Directorate, DCE Nwanneka Nwokike, and other senior officials, Olukoyede assured the bereaved family that the Commission shared in their pain.

Speaking to the grieving family, Olukoyede paid tribute to Sahabi, describing him as a gallant officer who died in service to his fatherland.

“As a Commission, we share in the pain and grief of the loss, but we cannot question the time that the Lord calls us home. The late Aminu was a gallant officer full of promise and in the service of his fatherland when he met with the tragic incident. Indeed, Allah gives and Allah takes,” Olukoyede said.

The EFCC Chairman also assured the family that justice would be served on those responsible for the officer’s death.

“I am personally here to assure you that his sacrifice will never be forgotten, nor will those accused of this heinous act be allowed to go free. They must and they will face the full wrath of the law.”

Olukoyede then presented the Posthumous Award of Bravery to the family, along with a Condolence Letter on behalf of the EFCC and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to supporting the fallen officer’s loved ones, Olukoyede pledged that the family would not be abandoned.

“Going forward, I want to assure you that the family will not be forgotten, as I will make time to visit intermittently. For us in the EFCC, we are a family. We have finished processing the benefits of the late officer, and they will be released to the next-of-kin immediately.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Justice Mohammed Lawal Shuaibu (JCA) thanked the EFCC Chairman for his personal involvement and the Commission’s swift intervention in ensuring that Sahabi’s remains were conveyed home for burial.

“I was literally on the phone with the Chairman consecutively after the incident, and we also saw the EFCC delegation during the burial of our son, led by the Secretary to the Commission.”

He also expressed appreciation for the EFCC’s decision to name a building at the EFCC Academy, Abuja, in Sahabi’s honour.

“As a family, we are deeply grateful for this gesture to immortalize his sacrifice,” he said.

Following the condolence visit, Olukoyede proceeded to the EFCC Sokoto Zonal Directorate, where he inspected a guard of honour and held meetings with officers of the Commission.
