Motorists, commercial motorcyclists, and other petrol users in Ekiti state have called for at least a 50 per cent reduction in the commodity’s price. It costs less than 1,000 naira across the state, particularly in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

They, however, posited that the current fuel pump price is still high, calling on the federal government and the concerned institutions to take further action to reduce it.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and Dangote Refinery announced in December last year that they would reduce the ex-depot price to 899 naira ($0.58) per litre.

The reduction in the price was then seen as a sign that the fuel pump price may begin to come down in different parts of Nigeria.

For some months before now, residents of the state and across the country had been buying fuel at prices as high as 1,200 naira or more, depending on the state.

The people decried the fluctuating price of the commodity in 2025, which saw Dangote Refinery increase and reduce the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), attributing to an increase in the price of crude oil in the global market.

The latest is the reduction in the price of the product to N890 from N950 per litre, effective from February 1, and the retail pump price is expected to come down.

Most independent marketers still sell a few naira and kobo for less than a thousand naira.

A check by our correspondent showed that AA Rano presently sells the products for N974 per litre, Matrix N978 per litre, Total 975 per litre, NIPCO N998 per litre, BOVAS N967 per litre, and Energy N998 per litre, among other prices.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP in Ado Ekiti, a student of the state varsity who identified herself as Joke said it is worrisome that the fuel pump price is still high and the prices of goods and services keep increasing.

Also, a civil servant, Mr Olatunji, said he has been finding it challenging to fuel his vehicle and move around with it since last year when the price increased to around N1200 per litre.

For a businessman, Olakunle, the increasing price of fuel since last year has adversely affected his business, and he has been looking forward to the day the price will be reduced by at least 50% to put his business back on track.
