The management of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has expressed disapproval of certain unions collecting dues and issuing tickets at inappropriate locations.

In a statement released by the Executive Chairman of the EIRS, Oladele Bankole-Balogun, the practice was described as both inappropriate and unacceptable.

“The Edo State Internal Revenue Service has observed that some unions are illegally collecting their dues and issuing tickets in unsuitable areas, which is unacceptable,” the statement read.

“The EIRS prohibits the collection of union dues at designated haulage fee collection points. This decision aims to streamline operations and enhance efficiency and transparency within the haulage sector.”

Explaining the rationale behind this decision, he noted that separating the collection of union dues from haulage fee points would eliminate potential confusion and improve operational efficiency.

“By separating these collections, we aim to enhance the efficiency of our operations and prevent any potential confusion,” he stated.

He reiterated that only EIRS revenue collectors are responsible for collecting haulage fees through the issuance of revenue scratch cards, ensuring that haulage fee points remain focused on their primary purpose to minimise disruptions and enhance overall operations.

“Unions will need to adopt alternative methods for collecting dues from their members. The government is committed to working with the unions to maintain peace and order in our great state,” he added.

“Haulage Fee Beats are dedicated solely to the collection of haulage fees, promoting greater efficiency and focus in operations without the additional burden of union dues collection.”

Bankole-Balogun urged stakeholders to take note of this development and called on all security agencies to assist the EIRS in enforcement and sanctions.
