Former chief of army staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd) has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s technological and environmental landscape, as the Tukur Buratai Research Centre hosted an exhibition by BYD Motors, a leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer.
Buratai, who heads the research centre, stressed the need to overcome cost barriers to EV adoption in Nigeria. “We have become conscious of the environment and are seeking alternative ways to power our vehicles and homes,” he stated, underscoring the country’s readiness to embrace sustainable mobility.
The event, held at the Tukur Buratai Research Centre in Gora, showcased BYD’s ambitious plans for Nigeria’s EV sector, including the potential establishment of an assembly plant. Two models with a driving range of 500km and 600km per charge were on display, equipped with home charging kits capable of a full charge within eight hours. BYD’s Technical Head, Mr Rhak Argo estimated a full charge would cost approximately N14,000, providing a week’s worth of travel.
The special guest of honour, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, commended Buratai’s leadership and described him as a key figure in national development. He also highlighted Buratai’s foundational role in combating banditry in Zamfara State. “Whatever success recorded today in the fight against banditry is a foundation laid down by General Tukur Buratai,” Yari noted. The exhibition also featured the Ketti District property development project, touted as “Africa’s First Net-Zero Green City,” and a furniture showcase in collaboration with the Nigerian Export Processing Zones Authority.
Managing Director of BYD Motors Nigeria, Mr Moses Ayom, reinforced the company’s commitment to making Nigeria a hub for EVs in West Africa. “BYD means ‘Build Your Dream,’ and our mission is to ensure that Nigeria embraces the global trend towards electric mobility,” he said. He highlighted China’s success, where 85% of vehicles are already electric, with a target of full EV adoption by 2030. With BYD Motors considering an EV assembly plant in Nigeria, Buratai’s research centre has positioned itself as a strategic hub for innovation and sustainable development. The collaboration marks a significant step towards transforming Nigeria into a key player in the electric vehicle market across the region.
