The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) today welcomed former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, to a discourse on “The Role of Writers in Nation Building and Africa’s First Presidential Library.” The event highlighted the critical influence of writers in shaping societies and fostering national development.

In his address, ANA Chairman Arc. Chukwudi Eze emphasised the association’s commitment to literature as a vehicle for human progress. He noted that ANA continues to thrive through the spoken word and the written craft, engaging in critical discourse that enhances human experience and development.

Chief Obasanjo underscored the importance of writing in advancing civilisation in his keynote speech. “If writing is so important, then writers are important. Nation-building is a task for all, and writers are uniquely responsible for shaping its course,” he said.

One of Nigeria’s most impactful leaders, the former presidentassembled a cabinet of accomplished professionals and initiated policies that transformed the nation. Under his leadership, Nigeria transitioned from a debt-ridden economy to a debt-free status, while groundbreaking policies, such as the introduction of mobile telecommunications, revolutionised the socio-economic landscape.

Referencing historical precedents, he cited that readers make great leaders—as an example of how the written word has shaped national destinies.

The event also featured poetry and spoken word presentations by schoolchildren envisioning a progressive Nigeria. ANA Abuja has recorded significant growth, with membership expanding from 59 to 753 under the leadership principles championed by Chief Obasanjo through the African Leadership Forum.

Among its notable initiatives, ANA has supported young authors, including the publication of works by the 13-year-old Adelaja twins, who presented their books at the event. With adequate financial backing, the association aims to sponsor emerging writers for international exchanges and residency programs, nurturing Africa’s next generation of literary icons in the footsteps of Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, and Chimamanda Adichie.
