A development activist, Aderonke Ige and 43 other Nigerian Chevening scholars have returned home with a renewed commitment to driving climate justice and youth empowerment.

Fresh from their master’s programmes under the prestigious Chevening Scholarship in the United Kingdom, the scholars received a warm welcome from the British High Commission in Nigeria, signalling the start of their impactful contributions to society.

At a reception held at the British residence in Lagos, scholars reflected on their transformative experiences in the UK. Ige, who earned an MSc in Development Studies from the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), University of London, described her time abroad as “well-rounded, expository, and challenging in meaningful ways.”

She highlighted the UK’s emphasis on mental well-being and London’s inclusive, multicultural environment as key influences on her advocacy work.

British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter celebrated the scholars’ achievements. He encouraged them to take advantage of the vast opportunities available through the Chevening Alumni network and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

A staunch advocate for social change, Ige underscored the urgent need for action in climate justice, water access, gender equity, and youth development. “To whom much is given, much is expected,” she asserted, reaffirming her dedication to driving systemic change.

While in the UK, she actively mobilised communities for climate action, contributed to discussions at COP 28 on climate finance and reparations, and tackled Africa’s youth democratic disconnect at the Pan-African Youth Forum in Algeria.

Since returning to Nigeria, Ige has collaborated with fellow Chevening scholars Olufunke Oyinlola and Miracle Ogba to draft a model climate change law for Africa. This initiative, in partnership with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Institute of Nigeria (NILDS) and the Africa Group of Negotiators Support led by Professor George Wamukoya, highlights the region’s commitment to sustainability and human rights.
