The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be determined to break a long-standing curse as they face the high-flying Amavubi of Rwanda this Friday’s evening in a crucial Matchday 5 encounter of the FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers at the Amahori Stadium in Kigali.
Despite Nigeria’s illustrious football history, they have yet to secure a victory on Rwandan soil, with all three previous meetings culminating in draws. The only goal Nigeria has managed in Rwanda was scored by Obafemi Martins during a 2005 World Cup qualifier.
As the Nigerian squad seeks to revitalise their World Cup qualifying campaign, they find themselves in desperate need of a victory following a challenging start to their qualifying journey. With just three points from four matches, the Super Eagles currently languish in fifth place, hovering just above last-placed Zimbabwe. In stark contrast, the Rwandans occupy the top of Group C, showcasing a commendable record of two wins, one draw, and one loss, including a recent 1-0 triumph over Lesotho.
Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has been outspoken about the team’s determination to turn things around under new head coach Eric Chelle. “It takes more than a coach to win football matches; players must also be at their best, show commitment, and bear in mind that we can all fly together to reach our goal,” he noted. Osimhen added that the team is eager to rectify past mistakes and improve their standings against Rwanda.
Meanwhile, the Rwanda’s new Algerian coach, Adel Amrouche, has expressed confidence in his team’s potential, emphasising the importance of unity and support from both the federation and the public. “I work a lot; I’m not a coach who talks too much. Everyone has a role to play for the team’s success, including journalists because you are part of the development of football,” Amrouche remarked.
Historically, Nigeria boasts a more distinguished footballing pedigree with three Africa Cup of Nations titles and six World Cup appearances. However, encounters with Rwanda have proven challenging and closely contested. In their seven previous meetings, Nigeria has secured two victories, with four matches ending in draws and one loss. Notably, all three encounters held in Rwanda have resulted in stalemates—an aspect the Super Eagles will be keen to change today.
