Adeniyi Adekoya, also known as Adeniyi Drumz, has become a well-known name in Nigeria’s music scene. His rise from a young boy making music with whatever he could find to a celebrated drummer with international recognition is a story of passion, hard work, and staying true to his craft.
Adeniyi hails from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, and his journey with drumming started when he was just a little boy. He was raised in Molete, Ibadan, a lively area filled with the sounds of everyday life. Music was always a big part of his family life, especially during their Christian devotionals. From a very young age, Adeniyi felt a deep connection to rhythm, and instead of playing with typical toys, he used things like kegs and metal plates to create beats. These early days of making makeshift instruments helped shape his love for drumming.
Growing up in Nigeria, where pursuing music as a career was not always encouraged, was tough for Adeniyi. “Drumming wasn’t just about noise, it was about expressing myself, about connecting with people,” he says. But he didn’t let the obstacles discourage him.
Adeniyi’s love for music deepened in church, where he began drumming. While some of his neighbors scolded him for the noise, it didn’t stop him. Without formal music training, Adeniyi taught himself by watching other drummers, listening to music, and practicing hard. His journey was all about learning through discipline and consistency.
Despite the struggles, Adeniyi’s passion and drive paid off. His unique style of drumming, which mixes traditional rhythms with modern techniques, caught the attention of those in the music industry. This eventually led him to perform on major stages and travel the world.
One of his proudest moments came when he was named Best Drummer of the Year at the prestigious Eko Heritage Awards. The event, held at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, recognized Adeniyi for his years of hard work and dedication. “This award is not just for me, but for everyone who has supported me,” he said, acknowledging his family, mentors, and fans who helped him along the way.
Adeniyi has also made a big impact on others. He has mentored many up-and-coming drummers, including his younger brother, who went on to become a finalist in Nigeria’s Got Talent. Adeniyi believes in the power of consistency and hard work. “Talent is important, but consistency is what really makes a difference,” he shares. He encourages young musicians to keep pushing, even when things get tough.
With performances at big events and even at a presidential dinner at Aso Villa, Adeniyi’s story is a reminder that success comes through determination and a love for what you do. His journey continues to inspire both Nigerian and international audiences.
Now, Adeniyi is bringing his drumming skills to Sheffield on March 26th, 2025, with an event called Drums Dialogue & Rhythm Exchange. At this event, Adeniyi will showcase his talent, share his personal stories, and explore different drumming styles. But it won’t just be a performance—he’s inviting the audience to join in. The crowd will have the chance to clap along, take part in call-and-response drumming, and really feel the music. It’s an opportunity for everyone to connect through rhythm and experience the magic of drumming in a whole new way.
