Christian Council Raises The Alarm Over Tension In Nigeria

The president of the Christian Council of Nigeria Most Rev. David Onuoha, has called on Nigerians across all divides to unite and work towards preserving the nation amid growing insecurity and economic hardship.

In a statement released yesterday, Dr Onuoha expressed concern over the heightened tension in the country and warned that the current situation does not bode well for any segment of the population.

“At a time of economic hardship and growing insecurity of lives and property, efforts should be channeled towards finding solutions that will make life more meaningful and bearable to the citizens,” the statement read.

He urged leaders at all levels to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians and refrain from actions that could heat up the polity.

“Avoiding actions that may promote uneasiness and confusion, no matter how politically correct it may appear, is the best way to go,” he said, warning that impunity often leads to anarchy.

Addressing the judiciary, the Christian Council of Nigeria president called on judicial officers to uphold the rule of law with fairness and integrity, likening their responsibility to that of God — the ultimate judge who brings order out of chaos.

“Nigerians look up to them for pronouncements that will hold everyone accountable, and compel them to abide by rules, no matter how highly placed,” he added.

He also charged lawmakers to remember that they are representatives of the people and not replacements for them. He said any action not in the citizens’ interest would amount to a betrayal of trust.

Dr. Onuoha condemned the rising wave of killings across the country, including attacks on civilians and security personnel, calling for urgent action to stop the “agents of destruction,” including herdsmen, terrorists, and bandits.

“These agents of destruction… should be stopped before they stop Nigeria,” he warned, emphasizing that this could only be achieved in an atmosphere of mutual love, trust, and unity.

In a message of hope, he reminded Nigerians that the country is blessed with enough resources to ensure the comfort of all citizens if only equity, fairness, and brotherhood are upheld.

As Christians observe Lent and Muslims the Ramadan fast, he urged Nigerians to use the period for sincere repentance and reflection, and to rededicate themselves to building a nation “where no man is oppressed.”

He concluded his message with a biblical exhortation from the book of Amos: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
