A faith based organisation, Nasrul-Lahi-l-Fatih Society (NASFAT), has condemned the brutal killing of 16 innocent travellers in Edo State.

The chief missioner of NASFAT, Imam Maroofdeen AbdulAzeez Onike, made the pronouncement in press statement Alhaji Shamsideen Owolabi Oseni, the national public relations secretary of NASFAT, declaring that, “silence in the face of injustice makes one complicit.”

Imam Onike lamented the eerie silence from influencers and religious leaders across the country, particularly those of differing faiths.

He urged all Nigerians to raise their voices against violence and discrimination, highlighting a perceived lack of vocal condemnation from public figures and religious leaders from various faiths. “Had the victims belonged to different religious backgrounds, the media would have been flooded with reactions,” Imam Onike lamented, stressing that this silence only perpetuates injustice.

Imam Onike referenced a poignant verse from the Quran, stating, “Killing an innocent soul is akin to killing all of mankind” (Q5:32). He implored the society to value every life and strive toward building a peaceful and just community.

He urged restraint against any potential reprisal attacks, framing the killings as a trial from Allah. He stressed the importance of forgiveness and patience, asserting that these virtues would bring divine support and guidance.

In his remarks, NASFAT’s president, Alhaji Ayodeji AbdulWahid AbdulRauf, called for unity and compassion among Nigerians, regardless of religious or tribal affiliations. He reiterated the importance of being our brother’s keeper during these tragic times, encouraging a collective sense of responsibility to support one another.

Imam Onike concluded his statement with prayers for the deceased and their loved ones, expressing hope that peace and justice will ultimately prevail in Nigeria.
