A civil society organisation, the Civil Society Organisation on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI), has called on the Federal Government to launch an immediate and transparent investigation into the killing of 16 persons in Uromi, Esan North-East local government area of Edo State.

The group condemned the gruesome murders, describing the incident as another tragic example of the growing insecurity across the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the director-general of CSCHEI, Hon. Kunle Yusuff, urged both the Federal and Edo State Governments to take decisive action to arrest those behind the killings and bring them to justice without delay.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the brutal killing of 16 Nigerians in Edo State. This senseless act of violence has left the nation in mourning. No one deserves to die in such a horrific manner,” the statement read.

Yusuff also urged security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, to conduct a thorough and transparent probe into the killings and ensure that the families of the victims receive justice and adequate compensation.

While condemning the proliferation of arms among non-state actors, the CSCHEI boss called on the authorities to enforce stricter gun control measures and ensure that only licensed individuals are allowed to bear arms.

“We are concerned about the indiscriminate possession and use of firearms by unauthorised persons. The government must take immediate steps to disarm these individuals and ensure public safety,” he added.

The group also pledged to continue advocating for the protection of lives and the rights of citizens, stressing that justice and accountability must not be compromised.

“We will not remain silent while innocent Nigerians are killed. Enough is enough,” Yusuff said.

The Uromi killings, which reportedly occurred in broad daylight, have sparked outrage and fear among residents, with many calling for greater government presence and swift intervention in tackling insecurity in the region.
