The Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) to protect, preserve and promote the rights of women and children in the society.
Fanwo gave this assurance while receiving the chairperson and members of FIDA Kogi State Chapter during their courtesy visit to his office in Lokoja yesterday.

“I assure you that this ministry will work closely with you to achieve our shared objectives. We must foster a safer society where criminals understand that they cannot escape the consequences of their actions. Strengthening legal enforcement will create a more secure society, including safer homes,” he stated.

The commissioner emphasized the need for timely reportage and widespread sensitization of FIDA’s activities, particularly in rural areas where cases of violence often go unreported due to a lack of awareness of the proper channels for seeking help.

“I was particularly interested when you mentioned plans to establish mechanisms that would facilitate reporting cases of violence in rural areas. Many victims do not know where to seek help, and we are willing to collaborate with you to bridge this gap,” he added.

Hon. Fanwo reiterated that the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is centred on supporting the common man, particularly those who cannot defend themselves. He assured FIDA of the government’s unwavering support in its advocacy and legal assistance efforts.

“The government of Kogi State is gender-sensitive and inclusive. The recent appointment of Princess Nana-Hawa Yussuff as the first female Director General of the State Broadcasting Corporation is proof of our commitment to gender equity,” he noted.

He further urged FIDA to ensure that advocacy is balanced and that individuals do not misuse the concept of feminism to blackmail others. He encouraged respect for constituted authorities and adherence to the rule of law.

In her remarks, the chairperson of FIDA in Kogi, Barr. Kemi Omeiza commended Governor Ododo for his developmental strides and dedication to citizens’ rights and safety and  highlighted FIDA’s provision of free legal services to indigent women and children who lack access to legal representation.

“Many women face oppression and abuse but do not know where to turn for help. FIDA exists to provide them with legal assistance and protection,” she stated.
