In a major step towards curbing quackery and strengthening professionalism in Nigeria’s engineering sector, the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN) has inaugurated its pioneer council.

Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony over the weekend in Abuja, the president of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Engr. Felix O. Olu, described the inauguration as the culmination of nearly two decades of persistent advocacy for a dedicated regulatory body.

“This is a landmark achievement that will safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of our profession. For too long, Nigeria has suffered the consequences of substandard service delivery by unqualified hands. This council marks the beginning of a new era—one that prioritizes safety, competence, and accountability,” he said.

Engr Olu traced the initiative to 2006, when it began as a proposal within NIEEE, then a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

The effort led to the eventual passage of the CIEEEN Bill by the National Assembly and its signing into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2023.

The new council comprises 23 members drawn from 13 key institutions, including NIEEE, COREN, SON, NCC, NITDA, NUC, and NERC.

Describing CIEEEN as a high-level professional body, Engr Olu said it is now positioned to enforce standards and eliminate unqualified practice in the field.

He outlined the council’s immediate priorities, which include office setup, membership registration, publicity, and engagement with organisations yet to nominate representatives.

He also emphasized the importance of enforcing professional standards rigorously.
