We’ll Hasten Road Projects To Curb Flooding – LASG

Following flash flooding currently ravaging the highbrow Lagos Island, the Lagos State government has assured the residents that it would hasten ongoing road and drainage projects in the axis to curb the problem of flooding.

The state government gave the assurance when officials of the Lagos State government from the Office of Infrastructure and Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources paid a joint visit to Lagos Island to examine the multiple road and drainage projects being undertaken by the government.

During the visit, the officials told residents and other stakeholders in Lagos Island the ongoing rehabilitation of 15 Roads namely Idumagbo, Moshalasi, Iga Idunganran, Okoya, Oroyinyin, Adeniji Adele Extension, Ojo-Giwa Isale Agbede, Binuyo, Collins, Princess/Isale Gangan and Aroloya as well as the secondary and tertiary discharge drains in the area will not be abandoned by the state government, adding that the contractors are adhering strictly to the proposed schedules for the completion of the projects.

While assuring the residents that the flash floods being experienced were being addressed by relevant government agencies, the state’s commissioner for the Environment, Barrister Tokunbo Wahab who led the management team from the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources and their counterpart from the Office of Infrastructure and the contractors working on the multiple projects to inspect the extent of works said, to mitigate the issues, pumps have been installed at the downstream and in operation to bring the level of the water down.

He urged residents and commuters to be patient.

The special adviser to the governor on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola who was represented by the permanent secretary, Engr Ayodele Somide said, “In the interim, we have directed the contractors to put in place necessary measures to mitigate the flash flood and effective logistics while the construction lasts.”

According to Daramola, based on the survey carried out, the government has directed the contractors to commence work immediately on Adeniji Adele Extension while working simultaneously on Oroyinyin.

He assured that the construction of the roads would be completed in a record time since the contractors as part of efforts to ensure timely reconstruction of the roads would soon commence work on the road.

“The administration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a responsive one and would leave no stone unturned at reconstructing these roads as quickly as possible,” The special adviser said.

It would be recalled that the Lagos State government on Friday, February 28, held a stakeholders’ meeting to herald the flag off of the construction works on the multiple roads, drainage and urban re-project.
