The arrest marks a major breakthrough in the state’s ongoing clampdown on illegal miners.

The suspects, who were attempting to gain covert access into the State using trucks disguised as cargo transport vehicle operators, were arrested  at the Itigidi/Ediba highway checkpoint by security agents stationed in the area.

During the operation, several bags containing mining tools and dangerous weapons were recovered from the trucks.

The arrest came barely weeks after a joint task force compromising of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested 21 suspected illegal miners along Biase, Yakurr, and Obubra LGAs.

Speaking on the issue, Prince Paul Effiong, chairman of the Joint Taskforce, attributed the success to the vigilance and timely intelligence provided by members of the Taskforce and the local vigilante group.

The chairman lauded the task force for their effort, stressing that the state government remains firm in its zero-tolerance stance against illegal mining and other activities that threaten public safety and environmental sustainability.

“Our operation in Abi was swift and coordinated, thanks to the alertness of our men and the unwavering support from local security volunteers. Cross River will not serve as a haven for illegal miners. We are determined to root them out and protect our land from further exploitation,” he maintained.

He also directed the confiscation of the trucks and other items recovered during the operation, which was in line with existing state and local government regulations.

Representing the council chairman, the special adviser, Peace and Security, Mr. Friday Okpa, stated that his administration does not restrict the lawful movement of Nigerians. However, the use of Abi as a gateway for illegal mining operations will not be tolerated.
