Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has said it is working toward connecting major cities in the South East to national rail lines.
Its new managing director, Kayode Opeifa, announced this when he visited Abia State Governor Alex Otti at his Nvosi country home.
Opeifa said the corporation intends to add value to the nation’s economy, reduce inflation, stabilise the economy and cost of transportation.
In a response, the governor expressed worry over the slow pace of work on the Umuahia to Enugu section of the railway corridor scheduled for completion last year.
According to him, “We felt it was important to replicate the transport system we have seen elsewhere, not necessarily in Oshodi in Lagos State.
“The speed at which the execution is happening right now is different and slow, but, I am sure you’ll change the trajectory very soon,”
“I have no doubt that this idea that has been on before you came on board, may have been struggling, but I believe that as you get down to work, it will be done.”
He used the forum to reiterate his administration’s commitment to overhauling and modernising the transport sector to enhance economic activities.
