The Synod of All Nations Evangelism Ministry has criticised the federal government for failing to protect lives and properties of Nigerians who are being killed in homes, farms and even worship centres, describing such inaction as a “shame and lack of political will”.

The chairman of the synod and president of the Association of the Clergy in Nigeria, Archbishop Yimam Orkwar, said in a communique issued at the end of the first quarter synod of the All Nations Evangelism Ministry held in Makurdi,  Benue State, that the killings in Benue and Plateau states which had forced farmers to flee their communities is a threat to food security, aggravating what the country is already experiencing.

The synod described the killings in Benue and Plateau at the commencement of the 2025 cropping season as a clear manifestation of government’s insincerity to the people.

The communique said, “The activities of terrorists in several communities across Benue, Plateau and other parts of the country have assumed a very dangerous dimension. The most recent attacks and killings in Gbagir community, Saror and Tse Ahura in Ukum local government,  Buruku  Otobi community in Otukpo, Agatu, Gwer-West and Makurdi LGs all in Benue and the continuous influx of terrorists with their cattle is an obvious sign that Benue is on fire.

“To ensure food security, the successful return of farmers to their ancestral homes and farm lands, peaceful occupation of their land and cultivation of farmlands at the commencement of the farming season is the panacea to food insecurity.

“The rights of our people to live and own land is inalienable. But where the government that was voted into power by the people chooses to look the other way for terrorists to violently violate the rights of our people, is an indication that the government has failed and we are left to either rise to defend ourselves from the terrorists or seek the intervention of the international community.

“The continuous killing of innocent citizens in our communities without provocation has become a daily occurrence. It is time for our political leaders, traditional leaders, religious leaders, youth, socio-cultural organisations and all well-meaning people to wake up and stand firmly to fight this evil.

“ As we mark the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let us use this occasion to remind ourselves that He is coming back very soon. Believers are enjoined to avoid all forms of distraction, be watchful, prepare themselves and be ready for His second coming.”
