The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has reported a fresh crude oil spill at Ogale community in Eleme local government area of Rivers State.
In a statement on Saturday in Port Harcourt, the executive director of YEAC-Nigeria, Dr Dumnamene Fyneface, said the incident occurred on Monday, April 14, 2025.
Fyneface stated that the fresh spill occurred very close to where there was a massive spill weeks ago at the same Ogale manifold.
He said the details of the company that owns the facility, the quantity of crude spilled into the environment were yet being ascertained as well as the cause of the oil spill.
Fyneface however stated that locals who are members of the YEAC Youth Volunteers Network under the auspices of the One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in Niger Delta as well as the Crude Oil Alert System (COSAS) have reported that the spill was caused by equipment failure on a Christmas Tree located in the community.
He called on the relevant authorities, especially the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), to carry out a joint investigation visit (JIV) to the spill point and invoke relevant sections of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021 to ensure that whoever is responsible for the spill is held to account.
