New executives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) have emerged in five states in the country, including Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Osun, Kano and Kaduna states.

Elected as NYCN chairmen were Ambrose Okpo (Rivers), Akinbode Oluwasegun (Osun), Muhammed Sule (Kano), Umar Abubakar (Kaduna) and Uduak Reuben (Akwa Ibom).

The new state executives emerged from elective congresses of the NYCN held in each of the states, except Akwa-Ibom, where a caretaker committee was constituted pending the conduct of an elective congress.

Inaugurating the new executives in Port Harcourt at the weekend, NYCN president, Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, charged the newly elected state executives to provide innovative, impactful and exemplary leadership.

Sukubo tasked them with transparency, accountability, and inclusivity while urging them to promote peace, cohesion, and youth development as they assume their new roles in their various states.

He further urged them to form strong collaborations with government agencies, corporate organisations, and well-meaning individuals to attract employment opportunities and economic empowerment for the well-being of the youths in their states.

The NYCN president warned the new state executives against getting involved in politics or engaging in acts that could undermine the youth council’s constitution and tarnish its image.

Sukubo said: “The National Youth Council of Nigeria is not a political platform, it is not a partisan group. You must not use the Youth Council to endorse a political party or a politician in a political contestation.

“You should not be used by politicians to act against the constitution of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, if that happens, we will not hesitate to dissolve such state executive and uphold our constitution.

“However, we can support and work with government at all levels, the federal, state and local governments to secure the interests of young people. We promote youth agenda, ensure youth inclusion in governance, and mediate between the government and youths to foster peace and stability in the society.“

In their separate acceptance speeches, the NYCN’s new state chairmen pledged to initiate life-changing programmes and tackle peculiar challenges facing youths in their states.
