Senator Austin Akobundu (Abia Central) has said his victory at the Court of Appeal against Labour Party candidate in the 2023 general election, Darlington Nwokocha reawakened his spirit of service to humanity.

Akobundu stated this at a Thanksgiving service at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Umuọzụgwọ Parish, Oloko Ikwauano local government area, noting that it took God’s intervention to correct the anomaly.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Nwokocha the winner of the election against Akobundu, a retired Army colonel, who contested as Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate.

“This service is in appreciation of God’s validation of my victory in the February 2023 election through the court later in October,” the Minister of State for Defence under former President Goodluck Jonathan noted.

Describing himself as a bundle of God’s mercy and grace, he vowed not to disappoint Him and the constituency as “He did the near impossible by placing me in the Red Chamber”.

He recalled how he served God faithfully in his childhood days in his Oloko clan , pledging to complete the renovation of the church building, which he started in appreciation of God’s mercy upon him.

“I’ve offered myself for His service. I’m a product of God’s goodness and mercy. So, I’ll not let Him down. He brought me to the Senate to serve humanity and I’ll not shirk on that responsibility”.

In a homily, the priest in charge of the parish, the Rev Fr Sylvester Emeihem described Akobundu as a man whose outspokenness has earned Abia Central a pride of place in the Red Chambers.

His words, “If there is any senator that speaks regularly to improve the lot of his people and fights for their defence and interests without minding who is offended, it is Akobundu.”

“He is truly in love with the masses. Our prayer is that God will keep him hale and hearty to continue the good work he is doing in the Senate,” the clergyman added.
