New Pope: Cardinals Begin Secret Conclave May 7

The Vatican has announced that cardinals will convene in a closed conclave next month to select the next pope. The meeting will take place in the Sistine Chapel on 7 May and involve around 135 cardinals from across the globe. This follows Pope Francis’s passing at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, with his funeral held recently.

The duration for the election remains uncertain, although previous conclaves in 2005 and 2013 concluded in just two days. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated that the cardinals will first participate in a solemn mass at St Peter’s Basilica before gathering in the Sistine Chapel for the secret ballot. Once inside, they will not communicate with the outside world until a new pope is elected.

Voting will commence on the first afternoon, with only one round, but subsequent days may see up to four votes daily. A two-thirds majority is needed for a new pope, which can extend the process.

Votes are cast on simple cards stating “I elect as Supreme Pontiff,” followed by the candidate’s name. If no decision is reached by the third day, a day of prayer may ensue. The world will await the smoke signals from the chapel chimney—black for another voting round, and white for a newly elected pope.

Recently, Pope Francis’ funeral attracted heads of state and thousands of mourners in St Peter’s Square, marking his legacy with a moving ceremony.
