Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents stormed Buni Gari town of Gujba local government area of Yobe State on Friday night, two days after the North East Governors’ Forum meeting in Damaturu on security issues, poverty and poor road infrastructure in the region.
A security source who confirmed that the incident occurred at midnight on Friday, said the attackers burnt some parts of the 27 Brigade Tactical Headquarters, Buni Gari.
Buni Gari is less than 7 kilometres from Buni Yadi which also accommodates the Nigerian Army Special Forces School.
Also, some of the residents told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the insurgents fired their weapons sporadically before proceeding to burn 27 Brigade and some buildings belonging to the people of the area.
LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that military personnel under Operation Hadin Kai engaged the terrorists in an intense gun battle following an assault on Buni Gari, a community in Yobe State.
A credible source from the Nigerian Army confirmed the development in a brief statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) platform on Saturday.
An intelligence source said the terrorists launched an attack on the town, firing sporadically but were swiftly engaged by the troops in collaboration with hunters and vigilantes.
The source said, a heavy gun battle ensued, lasting for over an hour, before the insurgents were overpowered.
As of the time of filing this report, further details surrounding the attack and potential casualties were yet to be disclosed.
