The Kano State Government has directed the 44 local government areas (LGAs) in the state to contribute about N15.2 million each—totalling N670 million—for the purchase and refurbishment of vehicles for the Kano Emirate Council under the leadership of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

According to a letter dated March 25, 2025, and now circulating on social media, the funds were to be deducted from the State/Local Government Joint Account and paid to a private company, Sottom Synergy Resources Ltd. The company is expected to supply four brand-new vehicles and carry out the complete refurbishment of two vintage models.

The letter, titled “Conveyance of Approval for the Release of Funds”, was signed by Abubakar S. Dabo, Director of Local Government Inspection, on behalf of the State’s Commissioner for Local Government Affairs.

It read in part “I am directed to convey Government’s approval for the release of the aggregate sum of N15,227,272.72 per LGA… to repair 2 No. vehicles and supply 4 No. vehicles to the Kano Emirate Council through Sottom Synergy Resources Ltd.”

A breakdown of the allocation indicates that the N670 million will cover full refurbishment of a vintage 1969 Rolls Royce (DH 420), restoration of a Cadillac limousine and procurement of four 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR (full option) vehicles

The letter also directed the local government council chairmen to ensure due process is strictly followed in the implementation of the directive.

However, the development has elicted mixed reactions, with some netizens questioning the prioritisation of royal luxury at a time when many local governments face budgetary constraints, and poor infrastructure while supporters of the move said it reflected the state government’s commitment to restoring the prestige and functionality of the Kano Emirate Council following the recent reinstatement of Emir Sanusi II.

As at press time, the Kano State Government has not issued an official statement addressing the public concern.
