The bill seeks to provide opportunities for Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states to utilize other alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind and hydro for the energy needs of their citizens as well as the growth and development of their states.

The bill was considered in committee of the whole house after the third reading by the Clerk, Bashir Diso, during Monday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore.

Highlighting on its composition and relevance, the Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Husseini told House of Assembly reporters, that upon signing into law, the bill will boost electricity supply to the three states.

Husseini stressed that it will also alleviate suffering and reduce energy costs for citizens, equip small scale and mega industries with enough energy for business, as well as enable both hospitals and water treatment plants to conduct activities adequately.

On the structure of the proposed agency, Husseini said it will include a chairman, managing director and deputy managing director with each state having three representatives.

He added that the chairman of the board will be rotated among the states who will serve a period of four years.

“The managing director must possess cognate experience, with at least ten years of experience in electricity generation, control, and energy distribution,” he stated.

In a related development, the House called on Governor Abba Yusuf to provide relief materials to over 200 households affected by rainstorm last Thursday in the Doguwa area of the state.

Member representing Doguwa constituency, Salisu Mohammed, in a motion on matter of urgent public importance, said the communities affected by the natural disaster include Bahuwa, Rafin Dadi, Maraku and Asada in Ungwan Tshohuwa ward of his constituency.

While noting that no life was lost, Mohammed said residential houses, school buildings and places of worship were affected with most of the roofs and buildings affected, leaving the people devastated and in dire need of support.

The House, after careful deliberation, unanimously urged the state government to provide urgent assistance to the victims to cushion the effects of the disaster and associated difficulties.
