The Nigeria National League (NNL) board has continued to receive accolades from various sectors, with the latest commendation coming from the Edo State government. The government praised the board for its transformation of the country’s second-tier league and expressed its readiness to collaborate in advancing football in Nigeria.

The commendation was delivered by Amadin Desmond Enabulele, chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, during a courtesy visit from NNL Chairman, Mr. George Aluo, at his office in Benin City, on Monday.

According to Enabulele, since the current NNL board assumed leadership, it has successfully changed the narrative surrounding the most significant league in the country, saying the board has ensured fair play, leading to heightened interest from fans.

“We, as a government, are pleased that the NNL has achieved significant progress under your leadership in just under two years. It is noteworthy that an NNL team won the prestigious Federation Cup last year, and this year, Abakaliki FC has emerged as cup giants,” he stated. “They eliminated the two-time CAF champions, Enyimba FC, in the round of 16, and right here at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, last Saturday, they triumphed over Nasarawa United to qualify for the semi-finals of the championship, which reflects the quality of our league.

“I am also delighted to report that the NNL is no longer a league where teams merely buy their victories; teams are now winning on the road, and those who violate regulations face stringent sanctions for hooliganism and disorderly conduct. Additionally, referees are now promptly compensated, which has strengthened the league. I encourage you to maintain this momentum.”

Enabulele further assured that his state government, being supportive of sports initiatives, would be pleased to collaborate with the NNL to elevate the league’s status.

Earlier in his remarks, NNL Chairman George Aluo praised Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo for appointing competent individuals to manage the state’s sports sector, asserting that such appointments would ensure Edo State continues to be a leading force in Nigerian sports.

“I am aware of Insurance’s previous position in the league standings before your team took over. You are doing commendable work,” Aluo remarked.

Continuing, the NNL chairman said, “My visit is to congratulate you on your appointment as Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission and to discuss the NNL’s ongoing activities, as well as explore potential partnerships to enhance the league’s success.

“I must commend Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo for his choice in appointing technocrats to manage the state’s sports sector. This decision clearly indicates his commitment to advancing Edo State sports, and I believe he has made the right choices,” Aluo concluded.
