The ongoing excavation of silica sand along the northern bank of River Wudil is posing a serious threat to the Wudil Regional Water Supply Scheme, endangering the availability of potable water in Wudil, Gaya, and parts of Warawa and Dawakin Kudu local government areas of Kano State.

The Kano State Water Board raised the alarm over the environmental impact of the activity, prompting an on-site inspection on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Hamza Safiyanu Kachako.

During the visit, the commissioner assessed visible damage caused by the excavation, which has disrupted the operations of five mechanized boreholes responsible for supply of water to community reservoirs. The walkthrough of the affected areas was conducted under the guidance of Engineer Lawan Rabiu, Plant Manager of the Wudil Regional Water Supply Scheme.

Commissioner Kachako engaged in a dialogue with Malam Jamilu Ibrahim, leader of the sand vendors, urging for caution and immediate action to prevent further damage. Malam Jamilu pledged cooperation and agreed to attend a formal meeting with the ministry to find lasting solutions to the challenge.

In a separate development, the commissioner paid an impromptu visit to Natim Integrated Services Limited, a quarry company located in Fangwai community, Dawakin Kudu LGA. The visit followed complaints from the State History and Culture Bureau over possible threats to Fangwai Hill, a site of historical significance, due to quarrying activities.

The commissioner was received by the Assistant Manager of the company, Salisu Yahaya Challawa, who explained the firm’s operations and expressed readiness to cooperate with the State government directives.

Commissioner Kachako emphasised the state government’s commitment to protecting Kano’s natural resources and cultural heritage while also considering the economic wellbeing of local residents.
