NNL Fines Jigawa Golden Stars N2m Over Referee Assault

Nigeria National League (NNL) has imposed a total fine of N2 million on Jigawa Golden Stars Football Club following an alleged assault on a match referee by club officials.

The incident occurred on May 3, 2025, at the Kazaure Township Stadium shortly after a league match between Jigawa Golden Stars and Barau FC, a report by the Independent Mirror claims.
According to eyewitness accounts, the center referee was physically attacked by officials of Jigawa Golden Stars after the final whistle, resulting in injuries.

In a statement released on May 8, 2025, the NNL Disciplinary Committee announced the following sanctions:

“₦1 million fine for Jigawa Golden Stars for failing to provide adequate security during and after the match, and additional ₦1 million fine for the assault on the referee.”

The committee also directed the Jigawa State Football Association and the club to identify and submit the names of the individuals involved in the assault within seven days.

Meanwhile, Barau FC was fined ₦500,000 for not ensuring their supporters remained within the designated stands during the game.

NNL Chief Operating Officer, Dalasor Danlami Alanana, confirmed that the sanctions were issued under the league’s summary jurisdiction.

Both clubs have been given 48 hours to either accept the ruling in writing or lodge an appeal with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Disciplinary Committee.
