The combined forum of chairmen and appointees of the governing councils of Federal Colleges of Education in Nigeria and provosts have recommended that the colleges should be mandated to be the only degree awarding institutions in education.

Chairman of the forum, Professor Nuhu Tachi, said in Minna yesterday that it formed part of the resolutions of their recent workshop.

“Colleges of Education should be only authorised tertiary institutions to award all Degree programmes in Education,” he added.

He said the workshop also resolved that the policy by the federal government to give stipends to Nigeria Certificate in Education  (NCE) students as a form of motivation should be fully implemented to increase enrollment.

According to him the forum noted that the Federal Government should rigorously implement the dual mandate in FCEs to boost enrollment and enhance their sustainability.

He said the forum  appreciated the federal  government for the release of funds for revitalisation to address physical facility decay in the colleges and therefore urged the government to sustain the initiative.

“There should be adequate provisions in the annual budget for conduct of accreditation and resource inspection. The value attached to the teaching profession should be enhanced to encourage more enrollment in teacher education,” he added.
