Abia State commissioner for Land and Housing, Chaka Chukwumereije, has said the fight against building collapses in the state is a collective responsibility.

Chukwumereije stated this when he hosted the state’s technical committee of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria in his office in Umuahia, the state capital.

Represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Ukeje Ukpabi, he argued that such efforts would check the menace that has claimed many lives and property.

He said the present administration in the state had set up measures to end the menace and assured the committee that the ministry was ready to implement them.

In an earlier address, the committee chairman, Victor Ihediwa, shared the need to engage trained and up-to-date council members in the construction and building industry to end the menace.

He said such members should be licensed civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers “to carry out building engineering designs, construction, and supervision to avoid falling short of the act”.

On capacity building, Ihediwa stressed that the ministry’s engineering personnel need regular exposure to enable them to meet current challenges in the building industry.
