Organisers of the historic Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have expressed their enthusiasm regarding the appointment of Philip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, as the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS). The appointment, made by President Bola Tinubu, aims to reposition the Institute to effectively fulfil its mandate as a research and training establishment dedicated to developing sports professionals, enhancing athletic performance, and advancing sports science.

Zack Amodu, the Race Director for the Okpekpe event, stated, “The appointment of Comrade Philip Shaibu comes at a critical time as President Tinubu reorganises the sports sector. There is no better reform than focusing on an institution that plays such a vital role in developing athletic talent, advancing sports science, and promoting physical fitness.”

Amodu expressed confidence that Comrade Shaibu will drive the positive changes necessary to transform Nigeria’s sporting landscape. He believes Shaibu will elevate the NIS into a leading centre for research and innovation, conducting studies in sports medicine, biomechanics, nutrition, and psychology to enhance performance and prevent injuries.

“He will also ensure proper education and certification by offering courses for coaches, referees, and sports management professionals, thereby upholding high standards in the industry,” added Amodu, noting that Shaibu has been well-prepared for this role both before and after serving as Deputy Governor of Edo State.

“Comrade Shaibu was instrumental as one of the pioneer members of the Edo State team that collaborated with Pamodzi Sports Marketing to ensure that the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race became the first road running event to have its course measured by a World Athletics certified course measurer. It was also the first in Nigeria, and indeed West Africa, to be recognised as a world-class event and granted a label race in the region in 2015.”

During his tenure as Deputy Governor, Shaibu oversaw the Edo State government’s team that worked with the event organisers to elevate the race from a bronze label in 2015 to silver in 2018 and ultimately to gold in 2022.

“We are all witnesses to his successful tenure as Deputy Governor, during which he revitalised Bendel Insurance and delivered what is still regarded as one of the best National Sports Festivals ever organised in Nigeria,” Amodu remarked.

He also commended President Tinubu for his ability to identify talent and appoint capable individuals to key positions, as part of his renewed hope initiative aimed at reforming various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

“We extend our gratitude to President Tinubu for this appointment, as Nigerian sports, particularly the NIS, requires an astute and goal-oriented administrator,” concluded Amodu.
