An appeal for financial assistance to support the medical treatment of Professor Abubakar Roko, a veteran lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), has sparked mixed reactions across social media platforms.

The call for help, shared on Saturday via the university’s alumni official Facebook page, revealed that Prof. Roko has been battling a critical illness for some time and required specialised treatment abroad. The estimated cost of treatment in Egypt is pegged at ₦13million.

“We regret to inform you that our beloved friend, Prof. Abubakar Roko… has been ill for some time,” the statement read. “After diagnosis, we have resolved to take him to a hospital in Egypt for proper treatment.”

Signed by Professor Isa Garba Abor of the Department of Mathematics of UDUS, the appeal further stressed the urgency of the situation: “We must act swiftly, as the appointment date is June 16, 2025.” The post urged former students, colleagues, and the public to contribute whatever they can, financially or through prayers.

While the appeal has generated compassion and support from many, it has also triggered frustration and criticism over what some see as institutional neglect.

“Nigeria is in total mess. It’s disheartening that a whole university cannot settle common medical bills for one of its professors,” wrote a social media user, Abdullahi Inuwa Gusau. “Allah Ya ba da ikon taimakawa. This is an eye opener for the wicked academicians that dehumanize their students.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Abubakar Kayarda remarked, “The school management should take care of his medical bills. UDUS can do better.”

Others took a more balanced stance. Zahradeen Badamasi Gusau urged for both empathy and accountability: “Let’s render our support and prayers, please. But for integrity’s sake, Danfodiyo university community shouldn’t have to allow this matter to go this way. 13M is a huge amount considering the economy… but somehow sustainable for them. This is a great alarm to young and vibrant lecturers to tighten up and have other incomes… Get well soon Prof.”

The post also attracted comments on the state of academia and the welfare of lecturers. Assad Imam Madubi questioned the long-term appeal of the teaching profession: “How on earth would a young man join this profession? After years of hard work, the University can’t afford to take care of him. This is utterly shameful.”

However, support and goodwill were not in short supply. Bertram Azuike, who identified himself as neither an alumnus nor an acquaintance of Prof. Roko, wrote: “It is not only celebrities who should be helped in times of need and adversity. Therefore… I send my widow’s mite… All humans are neighbours who should be loved irrespective of creed and race.”

Umar Yusuf added, “May Allah grant him a speedy recovery. But a phone number should be provided for clarification,” while Mahmud Muhammad Yahaya noted, “Professor Roko is a very hardworking and dedicated lecturer. May Allah heal him. Ameen.”

Prof. Roko has long served as a pillar of the university’s Computer Science department, mentoring numerous students and contributing to academic excellence within and beyond the institution.

A bank account detail was provided for the donations to be made into.
