The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken a bold step toward transforming Nigeria’s healthcare system by commissioning an e-Health project at the state Specialist Hospital in Akure, Ondo State.

This initiative is a strategic effort to deploy Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool to improve access to quality healthcare and drive efficiency in service delivery.

The executive vice chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, at the commissioning ceremony in Akure, described the project as a significant milestone in the Commission’s broader digital economy agenda.

“Today’s commissioning attests to our collective efforts to harness the power of ICT to improve and revolutionise the health sector in Nigeria in a manner that better serves citizens,” he said.

The newly deployed e-Health infrastructure integrates advanced digital technologies into hospital operations, enabling healthcare professionals to deliver timely diagnoses, develop accurate treatment plans, and manage follow-up care more effectively. With digital patient records, streamlined workflows, and telemedicine capabilities, the hospital is now positioned to offer better services to patients, including those in remote locations.

Maida emphasised that the project is a two-fold strategy aimed at both improving healthcare delivery and contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy. “ICT can better integrate the health sector into the digital economy to enjoy the ubiquity that other sectors already benefit from. Secondly, healthy citizens contribute better to the digital economy even as they access care from e-health platforms,” he said.

He noted that the success of the project highlights the importance of collaboration, especially between the public sector and technology experts. “This project succeeded because of stakeholders who worked with NCC, including technology experts and the government. This collaboration has created a model that can be replicated and scaled to other regions,” Maida said.

The Akure e-Health project is expected to improve patient satisfaction and overall health outcomes by facilitating real-time data sharing, reducing wait times, and improving diagnostic accuracy. It also sets a precedent for healthcare facilities across the country seeking to integrate ICT into their operations.

Maida however reaffirmed NCC’s commitment to driving innovation through strategic partnerships. “It is through such collaborative endeavours that we can continue to drive progress and innovation in our country,” he stated.
