The incident, which occurred in the morning of Eid-el-Kabir, was first brought to public attention by a netizen who shared a video online showing thick smoke rising from a section of the market.

While the exact cause of the fire has remained unknown, eyewitnesses said the flames affected a cluster of shops dealing in mobile phones and accessories.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Fire Service was yet to release an official statement detailing the extent of the damage or the cause of the fire.

A trader at the market, Muhammad Daula, who spoke to LEADERSHIP said many shop owners were absent due to the Eid festivities and only became aware of the incident through social media.

“Many of us didn’t go to the market today because of Eid. It was the video that called our attention to the fire. Some shops across from mine burned down, unfortunately,” he said.

Efforts by our correspondent to reach the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf, were unsuccessful as calls to his mobile phone went unanswered.
