Akpakpan, a 300-level student of the institution, was allegedly gunned down by security personnel during an incident that occurred outside the university campus.

The university’s spokesman, Dr Sam Kpenu, described the deceased as a bona fide student in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday.

The statement reads in part: “The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has received with deep sadness the news of the untimely death of Mr Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level student of Computer Science, who reports say was allegedly killed by a security personnel.

“Although the incident occurred outside the university campus and premises, the deceased was a bona fide member of our academic community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

“The university is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

“We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law.

“We appeal to members of the University community, especially our students, to remain calm and allow the relevant agencies to carry out their investigations.

“The University remains committed to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all students and staff and will continue to take necessary steps to uphold these values.”
