The senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called for a redefinition of democracy that goes beyond the periodic exercise of voting to deliver concrete development, uphold justice, and protect the dignity of all citizens.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the senator emphasised that Nigeria’s democracy must reflect in the lived realities of its people, not merely in the holding of elections.

“Our democracy must bring real development, empower the weak, uphold the rule of law, and protect the dignity of every Nigerian,” she stated.

Reflecting on June 12’s significance, Senator Natasha paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Abiola and all Nigerians who sacrificed for democratic governance.

She described the day as a solemn reminder of the nation’s resilience and a call to action for leaders and citizens to recommit to the ideals of justice, equity, and inclusion.

“As a legislator and proud daughter of the nation, I am deeply conscious of the responsibilities democracy places on all of us,” she said. “We must ensure it works for every Nigerian, regardless of tribe, religion, gender, or class.”

The senator also issued a rallying call to youth and women, urging them to stay active and vocal in shaping the democratic process.

“Our voices, our participation, and our vigilance are essential in building a Nigeria that truly serves its people,” she noted.
