The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for unity, improved governance, and enhanced security measures as the nation commemorates Democracy Day.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the CAN president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasised the need for transparency, religious tolerance, and credible elections to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

Marking the anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993, elections, Okoh described the day as a ‘beacon of hope’ for Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“The legacy of the 1993 elections remains a reminder of our nation’s enduring democratic spirit,” he stated.

CAN urged Nigerians to embrace peace and reject religious violence, stressing that the government must protect citizens’ right to worship freely.

“The government has a sacred duty to ensure no one is persecuted for their faith and to deliver justice to victims of religious violence,” the statement read.

Expressing concern over rising insecurity, CAN called for urgent action against insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping.

The Christian association also demanded greater accountability in governance and urged leaders to address poverty, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits.

“We need sustained efforts to safeguard lives and property. Good governance is the cornerstone of democracy.

“Nigeria’s resources must be used to improve healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for all,” the CAN president said.

CAN also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance electoral transparency to restore public trust. “Free and fair elections are vital to sustaining democracy,” Okoh noted.

The Christian association also highlighted the importance of press freedom and citizens’ right to peaceful protest, urging the government to engage Nigerians in constructive dialogue.

Okoh concluded with a prayer for Nigeria’s unity and progress, calling on citizens to honour the sacrifices of past heroes.

“We appreciate the efforts of the government, security agencies, and all Nigerians working to uphold democracy,” he said.
