Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu has expressed strong support for the rights and dignity of persons with albinism, calling for greater inclusion, protection and access to healthcare for the community.

In a statement to mark this year’s International Albinism Awareness Day, observed globally on June 13, the First Lady stressed that people living with albinism deserve equal rights, public protection, and opportunities to live full and healthy lives.

“This year’s theme, ‘Demanding our Rights: Protect our Skin, Preserve our Lives,’ is a great call to action,” Senator Tinubu said, adding, “It reminds us that people with albinism deserve not only equal rights but also the dignity, safety, and healthcare needed to live full, healthy lives.”

She emphasised the need for public education and inclusive policies that address the unique challenges faced by people with albinism, including discrimination, stigma, and limited access to sun-protective healthcare.

“I reaffirm my commitment to advocating for inclusive policies and public education that protect the rights of persons with albinism,” she said.

Senator Tinubu urged Nigerians to build a society where every individual, regardless of skin condition or physical appearance, can thrive with pride and dignity.

Her message was part of a broader global effort to raise awareness about the human rights of people with albinism, who often face social exclusion, lack of access to education and healthcare, and in some regions, even physical threats.
