Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are interested in acquiring Spanish club Getafe as they aim to build a multi-club model in football.

Liverpool’s American owners, FSG, are interested in acquiring Getafe, according to Spanish outlet Marca. FSG are interested in building a multi-club model in a similar way to what Manchester City’s owners have. As an established top-flight team capable of developing and selling promising players, FSG see the club as a reasonable investment.

Liverpool director of football operations Michael Edwards spoke of Liveprool’s ambition when he said: “We are committed to acquiring and overseeing an additional club, growing this area of the organization. Remaining competitive requires investment and expansion in our current football portfolio”. An obstacle to their ambition would be the willingness of Getafe’s president who wanted to remain in charge for two more years before selling the club.

Getafe have begun construction on a new stadium and the project is expected to be finished around December 2027. President Angel Torres says he will not go before then. He said: “I’ve given my word to my family. The day the construction is finished and the stadium is inaugurated, I’ll leave. I’ll try to find a replacement first so I can leave it in good hands. I’m not going to leave it to just anyone; it’s going to be difficult.”
