The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has presented a cheque of N18,652,908.20 to the family of a deceased employee who died in the line of duty.
The move aligns with the fund’s commitment to employee welfare and social protection through the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS).
The managing director of NSITF, Dr Oluwaseun Faleye, represented by the executive director of Operations, Mojisola Alli-Macaulay, presented yesterday in Abuja.
He used the occasion to reiterate the fund’s call for all employers to enrol in the ECS and fulfil their statutory obligations.
Faleye emphasised that the ECS remains a crucial safety net for employees and their families, stating, “Today’s event is not just a routine exercise, but a reaffirmation of our core values, social protection, compassion, and service.
The cheque we present today is more than financial assistance; it symbolises solidarity and a testament to our shared responsibility as a society.”
He noted that the deceased was a staff member of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, who tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident while returning from official duty.
He commended the organisation for its cooperation with the NSITF and dedication to promoting the principles of the ECS as established in the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010.
Faleye further called on employers to go beyond mere compliance by fostering a culture of workplace safety and by supporting injured or disabled staff through appropriate job reassignment.
He also encouraged the timely reporting of work-related injuries or illnesses to avoid sanctions and ensure smooth benefits processing.
“All responsible employers who prioritise the welfare of their workers are essential stakeholders in the success of the ECS; they also must support awareness efforts and deepen the understanding of the Scheme’s benefits among other employers,” he said.
