HerStory International Honours Nigerian Women With Leadership Impact Awards

HerStory International, in collaboration with May Publishing, has honoured several outstanding Nigerian women with Leadership Impact Awards for their remarkable contributions to governance, public service, entrepreneurship, and community development.

The prestigious event, held in Abuja on Friday, brought together dignitaries from both the public and private sectors, including political officeholders, filmmakers, and key stakeholders in nation-building. It aimed to celebrate excellence and spotlight the achievements of women making impactful contributions to Nigeria and the African continent.

Award recipients included renowned Professor of Public Health Education at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Gloria Anetor; CEO of Happiness Computer, Mrs. Happiness Chibueze; the Country Regional Director of the International Labour Organisation in Nigeria, Dr Vanessa Phala, Commissioner for Health, Rivers State, Dr Adaeze Oreh, Ms. Rahama Sadau, and Mrs Lois Andrew.

Others are Dr. Bridget A. Yakubu, an Associate Professor of English at the National Open University, Adenike Oladosu, an ecofeminist and climate justice leader, Hajia Suruurah Ogunfemi, author and Certified Family Life Engineer, Dr Oluwashola M. Okpodu, an international development advisor and policy advocate, amongst other exceptional Nigerian women.

In her remarks, the Chairperson and UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria, Ms. Beatrice Eyong — represented by the UN Women Deputy Country Representative, Mrs. Patience Ekeoba — commended May Publishing for creating the HerStory International platform.

“This initiative validates, affirms, and amplifies the incredible work many women are doing,” Eyong said. “If you look at the awardees, you will see women from a wide range of sectors: from public health and education to culinary arts, skincare and beauty, entrepreneurship, international policymaking, entertainment, and community leadership.”

She added, “It is especially uplifting to see the recognition of Nigerian women who dedicate themselves to family and entrepreneurial pursuits. It’s not common for women’s roles in upholding family and societal dignity to be acknowledged publicly. I commend HerStory International and May Publishing for spotlighting that today.”

Eyong also reflected on how women are often discouraged from sharing their achievements. “Women are frequently told that when they share their stories, it’s bragging. That mindset has silenced too many stories. Today, we are gathered not just to celebrate achievements, but to share the untold narratives of women who lead, inspire, and transform.”

She explained: “At UN Women, we believe gender equality is not a favour but a right. Our work in Nigeria focuses on five areas: promoting positive social norms, women’s political participation and leadership, women’s peace and security, economic empowerment, and ending violence against women and girls.

Despite facing significant obstacles, African women continue to lead, and we are committed to expanding the spaces in which they can lead and thrive.”

In her acceptance speech, Prof. Gloria Anetor said, “Today’s recognition encourages us to push forward in our various fields, despite the challenges. It reminds us that our contributions to community and societal development are vital to the growth of our nation.”

She extended her gratitude to May Publishing and HerStory International for organizing the event and for consistently amplifying the voices of African women.

In her closing remarks, the Managing Editor of HerStory International thanked the awardees and participants for gracing the occasion. She expressed deep appreciation to the women whose efforts contribute meaningfully to national development.

Reflecting on her advocacy work, she encouraged Nigerian women to remain committed to their journey. “Don’t stop halfway. Keep striving and writing your stories boldly for yourselves and for the future of Nigeria.”
