The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has strongly condemned the recent spate of violent attacks in Benue State, which have led to the deaths of numerous innocent civilians and the displacement of many more. Describing the killings as “senseless and unacceptable,” the group is calling for urgent intervention from all tiers of government and a commitment to justice and accountability.
In a press statement issued by its national coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG expressed deep sorrow over the humanitarian toll of the violence, urging both federal and state authorities to act decisively to bring the situation under control.
“We are deeply saddened by the recent killings in Benue State, which have resulted in the tragic loss of numerous innocent lives and the displacement of many more,” Charanchi stated. “We strongly condemn these senseless acts of violence and call on all governments, security agencies, and communities to join hands to address this perennial crisis.”
The group also raised the alarm over reports suggesting that some political actors may be exploiting the conflict for personal or political gain, warning that such actions only exacerbate the already fragile security situation.
The CNG has demanded a full investigation into the attacks, calling for the prosecution of all those found responsible, regardless of their social or political standing. The group stressed that justice must be served to prevent a recurrence and to serve as a deterrent to future perpetrators.
Beyond law enforcement, the coalition emphasised the urgent need for humanitarian relief, calling on the government and relevant agencies to provide adequate support for affected families.
“The authorities must move quickly to deliver relief materials to those affected and to help them rebuild their lives,” the statement read. “We also condole with the families of the deceased and pray for the full recovery of the injured.”
The group further appealed to community leaders and traditional rulers to take proactive steps in promoting peace and reconciliation within their domains, urging dialogue as a means to resolve lingering tensions.
The CNG reaffirmed its belief in the power of unity and collective responsibility in overcoming violence and building a society anchored on peace, justice, and respect for human life.
