As part of the 15th International Widows Day celebration in Abuja, the Rock of Ages Empowerment Foundation (RAEF) unveiled plans for a groundbreaking empowerment program to uplift over 200 widows across Nigeria.

Founder and CEO, Evangelist Ignatius Newman Ezeigbo, emphasised that widowhood should not be seen as a barrier but as an opportunity for growth and self-reliance. “Widows have the strength to rebuild their lives and create a lasting economic impact,” he said. “This new empowerment initiative will provide skills training, business support, and access to vital resources, helping widows to become successful entrepreneurs and heads of their households.”

The foundation’s theme, “Uplifting Widows’ Dignity, Inclusion, and Economic Strength,” reflects a holistic approach to empowering widows beyond immediate relief. Evang. Newman highlighted the importance of equipping widows and their children with practical skills, financial literacy, and cooperative savings plans to ensure sustainable progress.

“We are committed to turning adversity into opportunity,” Newman said. “Through this program, widows will receive training, mentorship, and investment support that can transform small ventures into thriving businesses.”

In addition to economic empowerment, the foundation is expanding its healthcare outreach, including free medical services and transport for widows, recognising that health is a key pillar of overall well-being and productivity.

Beneficiaries like Habiba Audu and Mary Stephen praised the foundation’s ongoing efforts, sharing how previous programs have helped them start small businesses and gain new skills. “Thanks to Rock of Ages, I now see a future full of possibilities,” said Habiba. “The empowerment programs have given me confidence and practical tools to succeed.”

Evang. Newman also urged lawmakers to enact protections for widows’ rights to inheritance and social justice, providing a more supportive environment for widows to thrive economically.

The foundation plans to launch the empowerment program in early 2026, partnering with philanthropists, business leaders, and community groups to maximise its reach and impact.

“Widows are not victims but vital contributors to society,” Newman concluded. “With the right support and opportunities, they can lead prosperous lives and raise empowered future generations.”
