The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has unveiled his plans establish a Cultural Centre for Research and Development for the purpose of preserving and promotion of the rich heritage of the Oyo Empire.

Oba Owoade made the disclosure on Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State capital during the launch of ‘Know Oyo State’, a book authored by Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

Alaafin added that the proposed Centre would serve as a hub for scholars, students, and researchers to study the legacy of the Oyo Empire and contribute to the intellectual growth of the state.

Speaking on the book, Oba Owowade described it as a foundation for rediscovering the identity and history of Oyo, and lauded the detailed documentation of cultural and traditional institutions contained in the publication.

“As one who personifies culture and tradition, I am pleased with the treatment given to our heritage. The Oyo Empire, which I represent, extends beyond Oyo town, influencing Yorubaland and West Africa,” he said.

He further explained that the anticipated Cultural Centre would domicile works from renowned scholars like Professors Toyin Falola, Adeshina, and Siyan Oyeweso, whose contributions to Yoruba history he noted, were globally recognised.

The Alaafin further noted that with over 1,200 secondary schools and about 500,000 students in Oyo State, embracing the book in schools is essential for cultural education and preservation.
