In a political shift within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), members of the party’s caucus in the House of Representatives have elected Hon. Fred Agbedi from Bayelsa State as their new caucus leader.
The election took place on Wednesday night during an emergency caucus meeting of PDP lawmakers at the National Assembly. Despite opposition from loyalists of the former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, led by the House Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, the caucus voted in favour of Agbedi, signalling a new phase in the internal dynamics of the main opposition party.
Lawmakers who attended the meeting revealed that the decision to elect Agbedi was unanimous and rooted in a collective desire to reposition the caucus away from the perceived influence of Wike and his allies.
“The members of the PDP House of Representatives at their emergency meeting unanimously elected Bayelsa federal lawmaker, Rt Hon. Fred Agbedi as the new Caucus Leader despite strong opposition to the emergence of a new leader,” a lawmaker said.
He added that “the opposition which was spearheaded by Wike ally and Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, was rejected by a majority of members who went ahead to elect Agbedi. The tense meeting signalled a new reawakening among PDP lawmakers whose fortunes have been dwindling due to the anti-party activities of the Wike camp.”
Describing the development as a political turning point, another lawmaker who spoke under condition of anonymity said the PDP caucus was determined to wrest control from “spies of an appointee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who was poised to keep the PDP divided ahead of the 2027 general election.”
“With this development, it is obvious that the Wike group led by the Minority Leader, who has become an appendage of the ruling party sabotaging PDP — has lost another significant political battle,” the lawmaker declared. “The PDP Caucus in the House of Representatives is no longer tied to their apron string. It is now led by a trusted leader to give the ruling APC the headache of its life in the interest of suffering Nigerians.”
