In a demonstration of unwavering support for Nigeria’s sporting talent, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of athletes, particularly in light of recent uncertainties surrounding the future of sprinter Favour Ofili.

The director-general of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Hon. Bukola Olopade,

made the declaration during a World Press Conference convened in Abuja on Wednesday to outline the preparations for the upcoming African U18 Athletics Championship slated for Abeokuta next month.
Despite ongoing speculation about Ofili’s potential switch to represent Turkey, Hon. Olopade announced that the welfare of all Nigerian athletes remains the NSC’s top priority, revealing that Ofili, along with 68 other foreign-based athletes, have received their 2025 training grants two months ago, highlighting that the Delta-born athlete is still regarded as a Nigerian competitor.

“She has expressed her willingness to continue serving the country,” Olopade stated, addressing concerns over Ofili’s loyalty. “She was among the 69 foreign-based athletes who received their 2025 training grant. She is on the NSC payroll, and we processed these payments two months ago, making it surprising to hear about her alleged switch to Turkey.”

Olopade further clarified, “As of now, she still remains a Nigerian athlete. When we learnt of her alleged move to Turkey, it came as a shock to us.”

In response to the challenges faced by athletes, the NSC has established an Elite Athletes and Podium Board aimed at enhancing support systems related to athlete performance and well-being. “Athlete welfare is non-negotiable,” emphasised Olopade. “The Commission reiterates its commitment to supporting athletes, both in their sporting endeavours and in life beyond competition, recognising that a supportive environment is crucial for their success.”

The NSC’s proactive measures signal a comprehensive approach to fostering an environment where Nigerian athletes can excel and pursue their dreams without compromise. As preparations for the African U18 Athletics Championship continue, the focus remains on providing essential resources to nurture and empower the nation’s athletic talent.
