Maimuna’s Memoir: Give Women A Break!

Not to think of when a woman is behind the wheels of a car, driving, that is when you hear some men saying to her for the littlest mistake, ‘I go drive!’ Which in Nigerian parlance means ‘You want to learn to drive by all means and yet you’re hopeless at it!’

Please give us a break! Some men are worse behind the wheels too! Another one that gets to me is when you are having an argument with a man and the best pathetic insult he feels he can throw at you is, ‘I have the likes of you at home!’ Or worse case scenario resorting to call you ‘ashewo’ meaning prostitute in Yoruba. I mean, that is just so mean and petty. Why do some men have to do that?

Even as I speak, the gender equality bill is still struggling to get passed in the Senate. I know someday, things will get much better for the womenfolk. Women are doing well in media, military, sciences, aviation, engineering etc. We all should try to be nicer to women. I for one, I am thrilled by the Gender And Equal Opportunities Bill (GEOB) and hope it gets passed someday soon!
