The Federal Government has debunked reports circulating online about the alleged removal of Senator George Akume from office as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), describing the claims as baseless falsehoods being peddled by mischief makers.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF Office, Segun Imohiosen, the government reaffirmed that Senator Akume remains the SGF and continues to enjoy the full confidence of President Bola Tinubu.
“The attention of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has been drawn to rumours circulating online and in some media outlets regarding the alleged removal of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume,” the statement read.
“The Office wishes to state emphatically that the information is entirely false, misleading, and lacks any basis in fact, as Mr. President has no intention whatsoever of removing the SGF.”
Describing the claims as the product of disinformation campaigns, the SGF Office said the rumours were “a fabrication and a figment of the imagination of mischief makers who are out there to disinform and mislead the innocent public.”
The government stressed that President Tinubu maintains “unwavering confidence” in Senator Akume’s ability to deliver on his duties and drive the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration.
It urged the public, media organisations, and digital platforms to verify information before sharing, warning that the spread of unverified or deliberately false narratives undermines public trust and threatens the integrity of democratic institutions.
The SGF office also aligned itself with an earlier statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, which dismissed the claims as fake news.
“Therefore, Senator Dr. George Akume remains the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,” the statement concluded.
