The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH has arrested a suspected militant with a high-powered HK General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and a large cache of ammunition during a special raid in Peremabiri, Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Damigo, was handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and prosecution.

Commander of NNS SOROH, Commodore Omobamidele Akinbami, on Monday, said the raid was based on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance which was carried out with precision and professionalism.

“The swift and decisive action of the Nigerian Navy personnel ensured minimal disruption to the surrounding community and avoided any collateral damage.”

Akinbami also commended Labrador Security Services for their support, stating that their collaboration helped to ensure a safe and successful mission.

The Commander further revealed that the recovered weapon and ammunition will undergo forensic analysis to determine any connection to past crimes.

“This operation aligns with the CNS mission statement of maintaining and equipping a professionally competent and ethical naval force,” he added.

The Navy boss strongly warned criminals involved in militancy, sea robbery, and pipeline vandalism, stating that Bayelsa will not be a safe haven for such activities.

“Bayelsa State will not be a safe haven for them, and they should desist from these unscrupulous activities because the Nigerian Navy, OPDS, and other security agencies will not rest on their oars to bring perpetrators to book,” he warned.

In a related development, Commodore Akinbami disclosed that two suspected cultists were recently arrested in Yenagoa with a locally made pistol and ammunition.

He said they have since been handed over to the police anti-cultism unit for further action.

The Commander also confirmed that naval officers exchanged gunfire with suspected sea robbers in Akassa on Sunday, June 29, forcing the criminals to abandon their boat and flee.

He said the criminals’ operational boat was recovered and currently in the custody of the navy.

Akinbami urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, stressing that the security and safety of communities and critical national assets are collective responsibility of the citizens, “and together, we can build a safer, more secure and prosperous Nigeria.”
