Garba Shehu, a media aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, has confirmed that the ex-Nigerian leader is currently receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
In a response to LEADERSHIP inquiries, Shehu said Buhari had travelled for his routine annual medical check-up but took ill while abroad. He, however, assured that the former President was steadily recovering and responding well to treatment.
“It is true that the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu said.
“You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up. He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery while receiving treatment. We pray for his healthy recovery.”
Although the nature of the illness was not disclosed, the confirmation has ended days of speculation over Buhari’s health status, particularly after reports emerged of his prolonged stay abroad.
Buhari, who left office in May 2023 after serving two terms, had a history of medical travels during his presidency, with extended stays in the UK for treatment.
Shehu, however, did not indicate when former President Buhari would return to Nigeria.
