Barring any last-minute adjustment from the National Universities Commission (NUC), the much-awaited newly approved Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA), will open with 700 students for 21 proposed academic programmes by September this year.

The university’s vice chancellor, Prof. Fatiu Arogundade, disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking during a courtesy visit by the institution’s delegate to the Abeokuta Club in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Speaking before the club’s principal executive officers, one of the institution’s critical stakeholders, Arogundade, in the company of other university principal officers, including the Registrar, Obayomi Olukayode, and the University’s Librarian, Dr. Idayat Agboola, disclosed that the university was already in talks with the NUC for accreditation of the 21 academic programmes.

According to the VC, these programmes included: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Degree in Nursing, stressing that resource persons would be drawn from universities in Ibadan, Lagos, and other parts of the country to ensure a solid academic foundation.

“We are confident we will begin this year. If not September, definitely before the year ends. Our application for programme accreditation is with the NUC, and we’re currently awaiting the outcome of the resource verification,” he said.
